...if they write to standard output. Turbo Pascal programs, for example 
(yeah old), have some own routines for that and cannot be used to run 
CGI -- they must be wrapped in a batch file (!) for that to work. So, 
strange workarounds may be needed.

At this point in time, CGI and SSIs -- once used most everywhere -- 
would /be/ the strange little solution. ;-)

Yes, PHP is great, but the overhead of starting up a PHP process for 
every page reload is /very/ significant. Apache with PHP as a module 
absolutely smokes Xitami, despite Xitami being much faster for static 
content.
