I think this is a good question.

For static serving, Xitami is much faster than Apache, significantly 
more lightweight, and handles multiple requests like a champ. However, 
now there is lighttpd which is actively developed for this very role. If 
you want to pay there is litespeed which is apache compatible but much 
faster.
